Malaria Elimination, Namibia
Tanga Kashupi and Petrina Shikonde run the lab at the Namibia Malaria Elimination Research Partnership (NAMEP) office in Katima, Namibia. They analyze blood samples for the Novartis Foundation-supported malaria Targeted Parasite Elimination (TPE) program.
TPE aims to interrupt the cycle of malaria transmission by treating individuals at high risk who may be infected with parasites even if they do not show symptoms. The program aims to better understand malaria transmission in the area and determine the effectiveness, operational feasibility, safety, and cost-effectiveness of TPE as compared to screening and treatment in response to a case.
Evidence generated by the TPE study will be used to inform malaria policy and programs in Namibia. Lessons learned will help Namibia and other countries with low levels of malaria determine the best way to achieve malaria elimination.
