Better Hearts Better Cities, Brazil

In Brazil, it is estimated that 74% of total deaths are a result of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and cancer. Of these conditions, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Brazil, making it a primary public health priority.

Health systems in low- and middle-income countries are often not set up to provide care for chronic diseases and the associated costs can overburden the system.

Better Hearts Better Cities will convene multisector stakeholders and partners, each contributing complementary expertise and resources to co-design and implement interventions to improve cardiovascular health in low-income urban communities.

Better Hearts Better Cities is a Novartis Foundation initiative which seeks to improve cardiovascular health in low-income urban communities by adopting a multisector, multidisciplinary approach to improve the control of hypertension as a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
